A soft starter is a solid state motor starter that is used to start or stop a motor by notching the voltage waveform, thereby, reducing
the voltage to each phase of a motor and gradually increasing the voltage until the motor gets up to full voltage/speed all at a fixed frequency. The profile of the increase of voltage depends on the application. The voltage is reduced and controlled by 3 pairs of back-to-back , which are a type of high speed .Yaskawa ac drives A soft starter takes the place of a contactor and can also take the place of an overload relay in a standard motor starting application.

The main power components of an AC drive, have to be able to supply the required level of current and voltage in a form the motor can use. The controls have to be able to provide the user with necessary adjustments such as minimum and maximum speed settings, so that the drive can be adapted to the user's process. Spare parts have to be available and the repair manual has to be readable.Yaskawa A.C Drives It's nice if the drive can shut itself down when detecting either an internal or an external problem. It's also nice if the drive components are all packaged in a single enclosure to aid in installation but that's about it.
